Smith & Wesson hit the ball out of the park with their M&P series of pistols. Great pistols deserve great holsters, but more importantly you deserve a great holster. Whether at the range, at home or out on the town, a quality holster keeps your trusted piece safe, secure and available. Clint Smith once famously said “Carrying a gun isn’t supposed to be comfortable, it is supposed to be a comfort.” While this is 100% true, a good holster can make carrying both comforting and comfortable. While many materials have been used to make holsters from, leather is one of the first and remains one of the most popular materials for holsters to this day. Leather is unsurpassed in comfort and beauty and ages gracefully, gaining character and patina in ways only natural materials can.

Leather is timeless and will always speak of quality and good taste. In the last decade of studying holster design I've come to understand my own personal style and design philosophy. I believe that true beauty comes from getting the most function out of the simplest of designs. The maxim that form follows function is often misinterpreted and meaning you can have form or function but not both, I take it to mean that beauty in form is a natural result of truly great functional design. Craftsman from boat builders to sword smiths understand this.

There is no such thing as a high performing boat hull whose lines are not pleasing to the eye, nor a sword that looks awkward but swings and cuts effortlessly. When I started designing holsters I tried taking a holster and adding more and more 'features' to it until I had an entirely dysfunctional pile of features that neither worked nor was aesthetically pleasing! Then I began to study the work of great holster makers and began to understand that true function came not from the number of features but from the number of benefits that can be distilled into the smallest number of design features.

Subsequent changes and improvements in this model ended in the development of the Model 1917 revolver. With the firearm market more competitive than ever, S&W has managed to not only survive, but flourish and diversify. Smith & Wesson has been an industry leader.

I started thinking in terms of, 'how can I get this benefit without adding this piece/feature/complexity?' My designs shrank massively into the compact, comfortable, and high performance holsters I wanted to be known for.

At that point I was ready to start working with customers and end users to refine my designs. Over the years I've compiled feedback and made dozens of adjustments, making many small changes with each new prototype.

I now have many very satisfied owners of my gear with thousands of hours of accumulated use in all sorts of environments. If you have any special needs feel free to contact me as I am always willing to do what I can to accommodate and enlarge my repertoire of options and design techniques.

Holsters must meet several fundamental characteristics to be considered a quality, functional holster. Firstly, it must be safe. Safe to use and function as a safety mechanism for the firearm. The core nature of this design aspect is that the holster must fully cover the trigger area and prevent any external forces from activating the trigger. For a holster to be effective, it must properly retain the handgun. Any holster that allows your pistol to go bouncing across the parking lot as you exit your vehicle is not doing you any favors.

On the flip side, a holster that tries to remove your pants over your head as you draw also doesn't have your best interests at heart. I carefully mold each holster for precise fitment for the perfect amount of retention after the holster breaks in. The holster also must work with the firearm's design and features, a holster designed for one model of pistol will not necessarily work well if all you do is mold the same design to fit a different pistol. There are a number of small points of design at play here, one of them is how the holster interacts with the magazine release. When magazines hit pavement they often lose their baseplates and scatter ammunition to the four corners of the globe. To avoid as many of these delightful experiences as possible I cut the sweat shield so that it comes close, but does not overlap the release button.

This way the thickness of the leather itself prevents your body or anything else from pressing the release. If the leather overlaps the button it will exasperate the problem by transferring the pressure your side puts against the holster directly to the release and potentially ejecting your magazine.

Another of these finer points of holster design is firing grip clearance. As any good handgun shooter knows, proper grip is essential to speed and accuracy. This grip needs to be acquired while the weapon is still holstered.

You never know what situation you might be in when the need arises but don't count on having time to adjust your grip after you've drawn. My holsters are designed to have clearance around the grip to allow you to acquire a solid firing grip before drawing.

Rigidity is also important to a good holster so that it stays open after you've drawn to make reholstering easy and safe without having to open the holster with your support hand, thereby putting it in front of your muzzle. Grip angle is a personal preference to be considered when choosing a holster.

This holster has a modest amount of cant to it making it perfect for carrying on the point of your hip to just behind, or 3:00-4:30 if your buckle is 12:00. This is a semi-high-ride holster that holds the pistol at a balanced position on the belt. Not too high as put the center of gravity of the pistol high enough to make it unstable on the belt and not too low to show beneath your cover garment. Lowest point below the belt is approximately 2.5'. This is a pancake construction holster and as such benefits from built in front sight clearance. No drag, no ball of fuzz stuck to your front sight, just a clean smooth draw. Another benefit of pancake construction is the simplicity of the belt mounting.

A minimum thickness between you and the gun makes for a tight, concealable fit. No extra bulk. The years of design work that have gone into this holster is complimented by careful hand stitching, edge burnishing and molding to create a holster you can truly be proud to own. Black dyed vegetable tanned leather, fits S&W M&P 9/40/357 pistols with 4.25' barrels. Right hand, for 1.5' belts. For Outside-Waistband carry. Pistol not included.
