I bought a Serial to USB connector for a device that i want to connect with my laptop since my laptop does not have those Serial port that usually came with Desktops. So when i insert the cable and installed the driver, the program that i want the device to connect it with says:'Failed to open COM 1'. “Failed to open serial port” The flight controller talks to your computer through a USB port, but it’s not a direct USB interface – instead, the software must be “tricked” into thinking it’s actually an old fashioned serial COM port. That’s just the way the chips on the flight controller can be read from and written to.

Have an M3 here which just shows a red light when PSU plugged in. I have tried reflashing it, but get the message 'COM test error!' 'opening serial port is failed'. I know that my null modem cable is OK, as I use it all the time to flash other boxes. I'm also using a pc with a proper RS232 port.

I tried using another pc with the same result. I downloaded all the official abs files and tried them all, with the same results. I have tried waiting various times before plugging in the PSU.

I'm running out of ideas. I think it maybe a hardware fault?
