Do Points On Your Driver License Transfer From State To State
Feb 17, 2014 TL;DR - In my own experience, citations earned in other states do eventually come back to cost you points for an equivalent offense in the state where your driver's license is from, but they do not transfer with your driver's license if you move to another state. If you get a ticket for speeding in another state, you may be wondering if your home state will apply points to your license for that out of state speeding ticket. The answer to that question depends largely on the state in which you live, and if your violation is aggravated by other circumstances. Yes, points transfer from an NC ticket to a PA drivers license. I've had DLs of 3 different states in the past 5 years - IL, TN, and MI - and my driving record only reflects the moving citations that I've had on each (1-2 per). I actually switched from TN to MI and then back to TN thanks to a bureaucratic nightmare, and my current TN driving record shows a violation that I got under my previous TN drivers license that I had then transferred to MI, but not the moving violation I then got in MI. The citation I got using my MI drivers license was in MI, but the earlier TN violation was in IL. When I had my IL drivers license I got a citation in MI that came back on my IL driving record a decade ago but now isn't reflected on my TN record. I'm about to switch back to an IL license, I'll see then if my IL citation follows me but I doubt it. Point of serious caution - I was very, very lucky that I was able to scrape together $100 'bond' between the three of us in the car when I was pulled over in downstate IL - if this was not the case (for a $90 ticket, obnoxiously enough) I would have had my license confiscated and given a sheet of paper in its place that most certainly would have seriously curtailed that weekend's bar hopping in Chi-town.
