Pentax K100 D Firmware Upgrade
I updated mine a little while ago and I don't see a reason not to do it. I also bought a 4 gb SD card so I needed to update. The process is super easy and anyone can do it. Takes about 10 mins (maybe less). Just make sure you have fresh batteries in the camera when doing it so it doesn't die on you during the process.
All instructions are on the Pentax website. After going through the upgrade I don't notice that the camera works differently in any way. All my settings were preserved. There is one minor thing that seems a little abnormal. Before when I used to turn the camera on and forget to put my SD card in there, it used warn me with a message.
Jul 06, 2007 I recently bought a 4Gb SD card (because.PEF format + airshow = huge amount of data!) and had to upgrade the firmware before the card was recognised. But, like others, without that incentive I'd have stuck to the 'if it ain't broke' principle.
Now when I forget to put the SD card inside, it just powers on and then immediately shuts off without telling me anything. After you complete the update it tells you to take the SD card out. So when I tried to power the camera on for the first time after the update (without knowing about the camera's new behavior) and without having the SD card in there it started up and immediately shut off. That scared the you know what out of me.
I tried to power it on an few more times and it shut off each time without warning or message of any kind. Then I tried with the SD card in there and it started right up. Pentax K 5 Firmware
I tried to power it on an few more times and it shut off each time without warning or message of any kind. Then I tried with the SD card in there and it started right up. I have updated firmware on my K100 and it does not do this.
You may want to try re-applying the firmware. Jamsiro wrote: After going through the upgrade I don't notice that the camera works differently in any way. All my settings were preserved.

Mine does that if I leave the card door open, if its closed, it tells me there is no card in.
