Another Christmas Carol (pdf book) Another Christmas Carol (pdf book) – Daniel Carter, author In Another Christmas Carol, Daniel Carter shares his experiences of the true meaning of Christmas—and of love—and the power of hope. This heartwarming novella of brotherly love and the determination to keep a dream alive is sure to become a treasured favorite. In this true story, Daniel faces constant opposition as he works to realize his dream of becoming a professional musician. A childhood accident left him with 9.5 fingers, but he didn’t let that stop him from composing.
In college, although his parents want him to major in something more practical than music, they show their support by giving him the family piano. But his college professors dismiss his composition and performance skills and scoffed at his dream. Finances become so tight that to pay his tuition, he decides he must do the unthinkable and sell his piano. Selfdoubt and academic probation continue to plague him. Then on a cold, snowy December night, his spirit re-ignites with an unexpected gift. A Special Gift for You Those who purchase this book may download a free mp3 of “What Does Christmas Mean?” at: Use coupon code: ANOTHERCAROL2014. Away in a Manger (SSAA – Nielsen) One of my favorite musical inventions of the 21 st century is the “mash-up.” Used mostly in popular music styles, the general idea of the technique is to take two or more songs and combine them, intertwining their musical themes and rhythmic ideas to create new musical ideas.
I enjoy using this pop music technique in my works for the concert hall. In this piece, you’ll hear this used mostly in the second verse. While the sopranos sing the melody, the altos sing an altered version of the hymn “The Lord Is My Shepherd” as a counter melody. Meanwhile, the accompaniment borrows from “Joseph Dear, Oh Joseph Mine,” “The Wexford Carol,” and “Mary’s Lullaby.” Combined with the “Coventry Carol” transition between the first and second verses, there are five different songs and carols that will be heard. While the piano accompaniment illustrates the musical borrowing, the pastoral nature of this setting is best heard when using the instrumental accompaniment.
The original arrangement is scored for flute, oboe, guitar, and piano. The parts are included here, with an alternate piano/vocal score for when the instruments are being utilized. Feel free to use any C instrument that works for your choir. The guitar is optional, but I highly recommend it, as it really adds to the overall sound. It was a joy to write this arrangement, and I hope you enjoy performing it.
Away in a Manger (Two-part vocal – Leavitt, John) I love this arrangement of “Away in a Manger” by John C. Leavitt for Two-part vocal, violin and piano. It is just lovely. I was sold on this piece the first time I heard it. In this moving and tender setting of the favorite Christmas song Away in a Manger, there is a great feeling of love and liberation. The piano part gently flows along like water, the violin climbs and soars in quartal steps, and the two women’s voices lovingly describe the scene of the birth of Christ.
Notice that the tone and tempo of the last verse change and become as still and reverent as the prayer that it recites. A simple arrangement, but one that contains a deep and moving spirit. Great for a duet, or a two-part women’s chorus! Be Thou My Vision (Piano Solo – Tonioli) Be Thou My Vision – arr.
Jason Tonioli The music for this song is an Irish folk song entitled, “Slane”. David Evans combined the old Irish text written in the 6th century with the folk melody and it was first published in the 1927 edition of the Church of Scotland’s Hymnary.
It is now sung in churches around the world and is widely known as “Be Thou My Vision.” A popular arrangement of this melody has been performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in which they combine the folk melody Slane, with the text “Take Time to be Holy” which was written by William D. I decided to include this arrangement in this Christmas book because even though it may not be considered a traditional Christmas carol, the message of a Savior in this song is clear and is certainly fitting for the Christmas Season. Beautiful Savior (Piano Solo – Tonioli) Beautiful Savior – arr. Jason Tonioli Of all the traditional Hymns that refer to the Savior, I felt like this one captured the Christmas Spirit. I included this in this Christmas book because it has always reminded me of a lullaby you would sing to a baby. What better way to recognize the baby Jesus, than with this music that was written for Him.
This song is also entitled “Fairest Lord Jesus.” The music and lyrics were written by German Jesuits in the 17th Century and is known as a Silesian folk song. The version most people are familiar with was arranged by Richard S. Willis in 1850. Behold the Lamb of God Behold the Lamb of God, by Kathleen Holyoak, won the first place award in the Church Music Submissions in 2002 and a standing ovation in concert. Arranged for mixed Chorus (SATB) and organ, it is a wonderful choice for the opening or closing title for a Christmas worship service or concert. Written in a Classical style for choir but enhanced with dissonance and modern rhythms in the organ accompaniment, the music builds to an exciting and glorious ending. The first verse, with words written by Lawrence Lee, is as follows: Break forth into joy, oh Israel, Behold the Lamb of God.
He comes to earth this joyous day to spread His light abroad. Angel voices raise their song, Join in praise with Heaven’s throng. Break forth and sing, “Hosanna, Hosanna to our King.” Copyright 2002. Christmas Solos – Book (printed hardcopy) Christmas Solos – Book (Hardcopy) – Daniel Carter, composer Here is a book of Christmas songs for soloists. A few of these songs have been around for quite a while but most are fairly new. “Shine for Me Again, Star of Bethlehem” has been around since 1981, but this version is transposed a little higher and has a different accompaniment. There are also a couple of other pleasant surprises.
You will note that there are two songs I did not write. When songs as beautiful as these come to my attention, I find it irresistible in sharing them with others. I know you will love them as I do. My friend Rebecca Berg, who wrote them, is a gifted songwriter and singer. I hope that people will find and sing more and more of her beautiful contributions.
I hope you will enjoy singing, celebrating and proclaiming the Savior’s birth with this collection of songs! – Daniel Carte A New Star, A New Hope As with Gladness The Christmas Story The Songs They Sang that Night Was I There?
A Heavenly Shepherd He Who Built the Starry Skies What Does Christmas Mean? My Best Gift. Coventry Carol (Piano Solo – Tonioli) Coventry Carol – arr. Jason Tonioli The “Coventry Carol” is a Christmas carol dating back to the 16th century. The carol was performed in the city of Coventry, England as part of a mystery play called “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.” The play depicted the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew. This carol refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed.
The lyrics of this haunting carol represent a mother’s lament for her doomed child. This is the only carol that has survived from this play. Deck the Halls (Piano Solo – Tonioli) Deck the Halls – arr. Jason Tonioli “Deck the Halls” is a traditional Yuletide and New Years’ carol.
The tune is Welsh, dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol titled “Nos Galan”. In the eighteenth century, Mozart used the tune for a violin and piano duet. My first introduction to this song came as a kid when I saw the movie “A Christmas Story” and the Chinese Restaurant food servers entertained their guests by singing an out of tune “Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra” to the family in the movie. I remember thinking this was the funniest thing I had ever heard as a kid.
When I started this arrangement, I wanted to come up with something that was fun and showy to play. I ended up combining the rhythm from my arrangement of Called to Serve.
It seemed to fit welll, and this is now one of my favorite pieces to perform during the holidays. Have fun with it, and don’t hesitate to add a few extra notes or jazz it up even more when you play it! Four Canticles for the Christmas Season “Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” is a collaboration between and Lorenz Publishing. We are delighted to present to you this wonderful Christmas Piece! About the Piece: Bobette Olson, while a senior at Fairborn Baker High School in Fairborn, Ohio, wrote the lovely text which she asked me to set to music.
While an undergraduate voice and choral education major at CCM (University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) I set about working the thematic ideas for the text. At the time, I was singing tenor as part of the CCM Chamber Singers under the direction of Elmer Thomas, a protege of Robert Shaw. The style is clearly influenced by the acappella work that we were doing at CCM at that time, along with some recording that I did with the Whikehart Chorale, under the direction of Lewis Whikehart. This setting by the St.
Martin’s Chamber Choir ideally captures most of the nuance of each piece as originally conceived. The Recording: “Four Canticles for the Christmas Season” was recorded December 22, 2007 for Christmas with St. Martin’s Chamber Choir at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Denver, Colorado; Timothy J. Krueger, Artistic Director, Ace Edwards, conductor for this particular concert piece.
Hark, the Herald Angels Sing (Two-part – Breeze) This duet arrangement by composer Garrett Breeze features a challenging piano accompaniment written in a classical, almost operatic style. The vocalists each sing a verse by themselves before singing the final verse together in harmony. The form of the piece is altered slightly, interrupted by fragments of “Angels We Have Heard On High” and saves the title line of the piece “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing” for the piece’s dramatic conclusion! Also suitable as a solo for men’s or women’s voice. I Wonder as I Wander (Piano Solo – Tonioli) I Wonder as I Wander – arr. Jason Tonioli This is a Christmas carol written by John Jacob Niles.
The carol has its origins in a song fragment collected in 1933 at a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. In the unpublished autobiography, Niles wrote: “A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile.
She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed.
Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins. But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song.” Based on this girl’s song, Niles wrote this well known tune. In Bethlehem There Lies a King Told in the first person (an eyewitness likely a shepherd), In Bethlehem There Lies a King recounts what he experiences and saw at the birth of Christ. Music by Kathleen Holyoak and Lyrics by Gary Croxall as follows: I saw Him in a manger where I touched His hand and smoothed His hair. He smiled at me and I felt peace while in a stable filled with beasts. A wondrous child in swaddling clothes, a blossom fairer than a rose, In Bethlehem I found the babe and heard the angels sing His praise.
In Bethlehem there lies a King. “Behold His star,” the angels sing. “The Lord of lords is born this day and rests upon a bed of hay.” I saw the Angel of the Lord whose voice did pierce me to the core. “Fear not,” he spoke with solemn word, “For this is Jesus Christ, the Lord.” The shepherds came and wise men too. They knelt before this baby, who Was born to rule as King of kings and take away our cares and sins.

Infant Holy Infant Lowly Infant Holy Infant Lowly – Nathan Howe, arranger Infant Holy, Infant Lowly (often sung with the text Stars were gleaming, shepherds dreaming) is a memorable Polish Christmas carol. This arrangement by Nathan Howe features beautiful, natural SATB harmony over gorgeous contrasting lines in the piano and optional violin or flute. The instrumental parts also include subtle quotations from Jesus, Once of Humble Birth and The First Noel.
This is an ideal Christmas selection for church or school choirs with limited rehearsal time. A special one-page Christmas hymn each year, which was distributed widely among colleagues and friends. It has been a work of the heart as they tried to capture a particular aspect of Christmas that was meaningful to them.
This gentle little Christmas hymn conveys the beauty and simple purity of Him who came to earth that first Christmas morning. His purity is compared to “a lily pure and white,” “a lily straight and tall,” and “a lily clean and bright,” and ends with the phrase, “Like a lily, fragrant sweet, Came the Holy Prince of Peace.” Choirs will enjoy the simple pristine feeling of this Christmas carol.
My Gift My Gift, SATB with Organ (1976) Written at the request of a young adult religious choir in Salt Lake City, Rock Oakeson composed this dramatic four-part SATB Christmas piece with organ accompaniment. In the key of G minor and intermediate in difficulty (both for the choir and organist), this piece was born after Mr. Oakeson heard the poem, “A Birthday Gift, from a Christmas Carol,” by Christina G. Knowing that with a fuller textual treatment, a choral piece with great emotion and depth could be composed, he set out to write a text based on Rossetti’s powerful short poem.
With the text completed, he then set it to music which assists in telling the story of what one can give to the Baby Jesus at His Birth. This is a beautiful piece for both the concert hall and for any seasonal church service.
No Place for the Savior of Men No Place for the Savior of Men for SATB mixed voices with its gentle, lilting melody by Kathleen Holyoak, is a popular choice to for any Christmas program. The exquisitely beautiful lyrics take the listener to the scene of the nativity in a way that has never before been expressed: No room for a mother and child; No pillow, no blanket, no bed. No place for the baby, No room at the inn, No place for the Savior of Men. Where then shall they rest for the night?’ The street shall not welcome the King. No place for the mother to bring forth God’s child, No place for the Savior of Men.
The birds have their nests where they lay down their heads. The deer have their meadows to rest. The moon sleeps on clouds that are softer than down But in small Bethlehem, no room is yet found. The fish have their ponds and the rivers and seas; The lions their dens and the insects their leaves. The stars know the place where they’re tucked in the sky But the Savior has no place to lie.
A stable, a manger, a stall; Rough straw where she’ll cradle His head. Where beasts gently offer the warmth of their breath And give place for the baby to rest. So sleep little baby, Savior Divine.
Dream on while God’s angels descend. A place for the baby, the Savior of men, One place, one place found in old Bethlehem. Copyright 2012. No Room Tonite No Room Tonite Poignant and heartfelt, this original Christmas song considers the irony of the King of Kings finding “no room” in the world, even in the first minutes of his mortal life. It gently describes the drama of his young mother giving birth alone in a cold dark stable, surrounded by humble animals, because there was “no room” elsewhere. The song invites consideration – In the midst of our busy lives, filled with so many competing priorities, do we sometimes leave “no room” for the Savior?
Or do we strive to invite Him in – notwithstanding the humble and imperfect condition of our hearts? O Come, O Come Immanuel (Piano Solo – Tonioli) O Come, O Come Immanuel – arr. Jason Tonioli Think of a scene with shepherds from the “hills” of Bethlehem in ancient times as you play this song. Try to capture a sad yet hopeful feeling of a person who is waiting to be delivered from hard times.
Just as in ancient times when people waited for the Savior, individuals are struggling to survive today and hoping for something or someone to help them. This is a song of hope for deliverance from difficult times. O Little Town of Bethlehem (Kingsfold) (SATB – Zabriskie) O Little Town of Bethlehem (Kingsfold) – David A. Zabriskie, arranger A year ago I started working on this arrangement and then put it aside. I came across it the beginning of August (2014) and fell in love with it and finished it quickly. The classic text of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” uses the familiar “Kingsfold” hymn tune. This haunting arrangement will give you goose bumps.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have composing it – Dave Zabriskie. Silent Night (Vocal Solo – Tonioli) Silent Night – Tonioli, Jason This is one of the all time classic Christmas songs. It was first performed with a guitar accompaniment in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria on December 24, 1818. The text was written by priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by Franz Gruber. The song was also sung simultaneously in French, English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, a song that soldiers on both sides of the front line knew.
It’s interesting how music has the ability to bring different cultures together and break down barriers of misunderstanding that in some cases have existed over long periods of time. Son of the Highest Son of the Highest for SATB Choir with violin obbligato Son of the Highest, for SATB choir with violin obbligato by Kathleen Holyoak, is a wonderful choice for any Christmas service. It presents a fresh approach to the Virgin Mary’s experience when the angel, Gabriel, delivered the message that she was chosen by God to give birth to His Son.
Mary, overwhelmed and realizing she was fore-ordained to be the Mother of Jesus, humbly accepted the great responsibility, having faith that she and Joseph would raise the Son of God. The song begins with a gentle, rocking melody and builds to a powerful refrain and exciting ending. Follow the words as you listen: To Mary, blessed Mary, favored of the Lord, Came an angel on errand as prophets had foretold. Mary in tears fell to her knees.
Who would believe her in all of Galilee? He said she’d conceive and bear a special Son. His name would be Jesus, the Father’s chosen One. How could this be for a virgin was she? The angel assured that with God, nothing is impossible. He shall be called, Son of the Highest, Alleluia! The Father shall give Him throne And He shall reign.
Glory be to Jesus, the Messiah, the Holy One. And what of dear Joseph, so loyal and true? The Spirit bore witness he’d know his calling too; To be not afraid but fully believe With calm reassurance they’d raise the Son of God. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
Jesus Christ shall reign over the House of David And of His kingdom there shall be, shall be no end. Praise the Son of God. Full of grace and truth. The Savior, the Redeemer, And the Only Begotten Son. Sussex Carol (Piano Solo – Tonioli) Sussex Carol – arr. Jason Tonioli The Sussex Carol is a popular British carol that was first published in 1684, by Luke Wadding, a 17th-century Irish bishop.
It is a simple but fun carol to play for people during the holidays. If you enjoy making up songs, I encourage you to write them down so they can be shared with others. You never know if your song might be played by someone 300 years later. At very least, you’ll be able to play it again in the future.
Learning to write down music takes time, but I can tell you from experience, it is worth it. The Big Little Christmas Book (hardcopy only) The Big Little Christmas Book – Daniel Carter, Kathleen Holyoak “Oh what fun it is. ” to present our Christmas offering to you!
We’re packed “The Big, Little Christmas Book” with everything we could fit into it, but still had more! So the rest will have to wait for next Christmas. But that’s the fun part! We have plenty more “gifts” and surprises for another one! Every title in this book can be used in several different ways and by a variety of performance combinations. There are only 13 pieces, but considering the many performance variations of each piece for instruments, solos, duets, trios, quartets, full choir (along with descants to perform for congregational singing), and (deep breath) accompaniments for piano, organ, harp, violin, oboe, recorder, cello, bassoon, and triangle, there are dozens and DOZENS of musical numbers in this collection!
We’ve spiced up the mix and included a cool, jazz swing arrangement of “Deck the Halls”. What more could you ask for? (Let us know and we’ll include requests in book II Wink!) We’ve worked hard to make this book as useable by as many performers as possible, regardless of training. There are organ registrations and peel marks and performance suggestions for all the combinations we could think of to make the variety rich and full. Using our suggestions, you can make each musical number as simple or as complex as you like. We hope that as you immerse yourself in these songs, they will bring you and those who perform with you a gladdened heart.
The kind that refreshes your spirit and your ear. And we hope they bring to those who listen to you that little sigh of pure enjoyment. The Gift The Gift, arrangement for SATB (but mostly SAB), with words with a contemporary and fresh approach when referencing the birth of Jesus Christ, is a lovely choice for any Christmas worship service. The gentle, rocking melody is easy and can be learned in just a couple of rehearsals.
The refrain, “Share the gift that God has given; His gift to you, His Christmas gift, His gift to you and me” builds to a wonderful ending. Follow the words as you listen: The Gift Words: GARY CROXALL Music: KATHLEEN HOLYOAK God’s Christmas gift was never wrapped And tied up with a bow. It wasn’t purchased in a shop Nor found within a store. It was a simple gift, indeed, Yet sacred and sublime. It was a gift of love, a gift of life Of hope and peace divine.
Search out the gift, embrace it tenderly. Share the gift that God has given, His gift to you and me. God gave no gold, no frankincense; He gave no amber myrrh. The Father gave to all mankind, A baby fair and pure. He gave His Son to you and me, It was our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is the gift, our Christmas gift, Born that holy night. Search out the gift, embrace it tenderly. Share the gift that God has given; His gift to you, His Christmas gift, His gift to you and me. Copyright 2015. Tiny Little King A Tiny Little King Rich and worshipful, this original Christmas song captures the reverent adoration of those who visited Jesus while he was a baby.
It reflects the majesty of who He is, contrasted with the humble circumstances into which he was born. “Oh, he could have come in a chariot that blazed across the sky, Like a bold and mighty warrior, lifting his sword up high; Or he could have come in luxury, surrounded by lands and gold; But here he lies in a stable bed, sleeping in the cold.”. What Does Christmas Mean?
What Does Christmas Mean? – Daniel Carter, composer In 1979, composer Daniel Carter, then a music composition major at university, was forced to sell the piano he inherited to pay tuition. This last resort deal to remain in school included the option for Daniel to buy the piano back, but that opportunity slipped away because of ongoing lack of financial ability. However, during final exams and Christmas season a few months later, his brother, Tim, managed to buy the piano as a Christmas gift for Daniel.
As a result, “What Does Christmas Mean?” was composed on Christmas Eve that year and Daniel gave copies of the song as gifts. This story is now a book titled, “Another Christmas Carol”.
